The "Ecology Sites" at Currie Community High School have been developed and maintained since 1989. By good fortune we had a strip of woodland at the Eastern Edge of the campus. It was a group of sixth year pupils that first encouraged the restoration of the wood which was dying from Dutch Elm disease and which had been used as a dump for local rubbish!

A pond & marsh, a wildflower garden and plant classification areas followed on and soon we became a "Case Study" for School Grounds Improvement and use. Sudheer Carroll (Edinburgh Wildlife Group) and I have teamed up over the years to ensure that we share our special places with as many people as possible. We have created an "Outdoor Classroom"

We decided to write a descriptive booklet for visitors and school staff to explain the history, development and maintenance of our outdoor classroom. Even more importantly we wanted to share some of the simple activities we use to give Life-Long Learning and pleasure in our school grounds. This website aims to encourage the use of the school campus for Environmental Education through simple activities. In the future we hope to build an Environmental Learning Centre at the school and my colleague Alison Nind will continue our work to emphasise the importance of the study of the living world for all ages and abilities. The worksheets and clue cards are suitable for primary and early secondary stages, but we hope that the website will be of interest to everyone !
